interview with a vaulter
May 2020
Now that the lockdown is easing, Interview with a Vaulter will continue until the end of the week and then taper off as we enter the new phase. We hope everyone is doing well out there in the world.
This Tuesday's Interview is with Emer Maguire
How's it going, Emer?
It’s going okay! Well, as okay as it can be during a worldwide pandemic! I hope everyone is keeping well. Right now I’m sitting in my living room with my dog who is just over the moon. I'm home all the time so things could be worse.
What is your living situation? Do you have outside space or are you living in an underground bunker?
I live in a terrace house with a tiny small front yard area and an even tinier back yard. I’m not sure it counts as outside space, but I’m pretending it does and have been sitting out the front at all opportunities!
How has the pandemic affected your arts practice?
Well like the majority of creatives, I’ve had a lot of work cancelled. Most was cancelled in one fell swoop the weekend before St Patrick's day! Which isn’t great, but I’ve been trying to see the positive side of things. I’ve been trying to use this time to adapt my work for an online audience, and to make plans for next year.
How are you coping with the temporary closing of the Vault?
I’m a relatively new member of the Vault! I joined back in October 2019 and I love it. It gives me a space to create and I feel like I get so much done there as opposed to working at home! So my productivity has decreased and I miss having that creative space. But I’m hoping it’s not TOO long before it’s back up and running.
What do you appreciate during lockdown?
Living in a house I love. Seeing my partner more. Constant hanging out with my dog. Going to meetings in my PJs. Having time for things like home improvements. And having time to think about creative projects that have been floating around in my head for a while that I’ve always put off due to being too busy.
How do you imagine the future after lockdown? For yourself and the wider art world in general.
I think it will be a long time before we’re back to normality. My work is very events based. I’m a comedian (musical comedian!) and do a lot of event hosting and gigs etc, so I think they will be the last thing to get back to normal which is such a pity. So I’m imagining for me it’s going to be a lot of online gigs and events for the near future. Hopefully some art forms will fare better, like visual artists.
