‘Fauna of Mirrors’ is a solo exhibition of works on paper by Wilhelmina Peace.
The show explores mythological themes of reflection and metamorphosis. Through a series of drawings, etchings and collage pieces, Wilhelmina wonders about the porous relationship between our inner and outer worlds.
The title for the exhibition, ‘Fauna of Mirrors’ is taken from an ancient Chinese folk tale in which the mirror people and the people of the earth used to live in a state of harmony, freely moving between the earthly realm and the mirror realm. This harmony was eventually shattered when a terrible war broke out between the mirror folk and the earth folk. As punishment for their belligerence, the mirror folk were sealed into the mirror realm and further punished by slavishly mimicking our gestures.
This old story formed the basis for an exploration into how we relate to our own reflections and how we adorn these projected images with the shifting substance of our mental landscape. ‘Fauna of Mirrors’ takes on a lyrical look at how our reflections might behave if they were granted a life of their own.
