Jonny Mcewen

interview with a vaulter

April 2020

This is today's INTERVIEW WITH A VAULTER with Jonny McEwen.

How's it going Jonny?

Ok, I think. Generally good, with some darker days when I struggle to get out of bed, or find motivation to do anything. My experience I guess has been very different to a lot of people in that I have been working in the Refill Quarter shop which has been really busy. Suddenly the dry food we sell like pasta and lentils and the flour is what everyone wants! It takes a lot of energy too, you feel everyone’s anxiety. Sometimes I am aware that I am putting myself in danger being in a position where I am meeting so many people in a day, but it feels important to try to bring some positive energy and normality.

What is your living situation? Do you have outside space or are you living in an underground bunker?

We are lucky to have a garden and enough space inside to give each other room. None of the gardening/home improvement stuff happening here as we are all so busy. We also have a new puppy to entertain us.

How has the pandemic affected your arts practice?

To start with I minimised.. working small scale with watercolour. But when the Vault closed I grabbed all my paints and unfinished canvases. The weather has meant that I have been able to paint outside, which has been lovely. Especially with the company of a little robin. Now I am beginning to run out of paint and canvas. I think in my work I am reacting to the global situation by trying to create a subversive beauty. And some days I can’t do anything creative at all.

How are you coping with the temporary closing of the Vault?

I miss my studio. But it’s good to know it is there. It’s a long distance relationship at the moment.

What do you appreciate during lockdown?

I am thankful that Susan and Charlie managed to get back from Vietnam.

I appreciate the space we have here, and the opportunity to get out of the house to work.

I like the new quietness, the slowness of pace.

How do you imagine the future after lockdown? For yourself and the wider art world in general.

I hope we don’t just return to what we used to call normal. I hope there will be a greater appreciation for creativity
