Film screenings: Myrid Carten and Ross McClean

Film screenings from the north of Ireland programmed by filmmaker and researcher Roisin Agnew as part of ‘Each Little Scar’ by Patricia Ferguson, 7pm Thursday October 3rd at Filet Space, London.

Reflecting on family relations and the act of misremembering as a tool of imaginative reappropriation of histories and narratives, Filet Space presents an evening of works by emerging Belfast-based Vault Artist Studios filmmakers Myrid Carten and Ross McClean, programmed by Roisin Agnew as part of its current exhibition, Every Little Scar. Moving between collective and intimate experiences of the north of Ireland the programme seeks to explore how filmmaking inserts itself a tool of fictional extraction in a region where the imperative to remember can sometimes impinge on the will to create.

Myrid Carten is an Irish moving image artist whose work has screened internationally. Using documentary and fiction, and often a playful combination of both, her films interrogate both the struggle for intimacy and the ways we are compromised by our pasts. She explores, with generous ruthlessness, the universal desire to be both known and hidden, and the costs involved in both of these complicated commitments. She has just finished her first feature documentary A Want in Her funded by Screen Ireland, BFI Doc Society, Netherlands Film Fund, and the New Dawn Award.

Ross McClean is a filmmaker from Belfast, Northern Ireland. His films have screened in over 50 local and international film festivals. Hydebank (2019) premiered at DokLeipzig, IDFA, Hot Docs and won Best Short Documentary at Galway, London Short, Spektrum, Docs Ireland and Leeds. His latest short film, Echo (2023), premiered at IDFA, True/False, Sheffield DocFest & Camerimage. Ross is currently in production on his first feature length documentary supported by BFI DocSociety & Arte and a short documentary supported by Sandbox & The New York Times.
